Results Are In: Metaformin HCl Taste Test Study

Things have been busy at TKL Research. Our clinical studies team recently wrapped up a study with Sun Pharmaceuticals evaluating the taste, grittiness and overall acceptability of Metformin HCl extended release powder in various flavors vs the current immediate release tablets and oral suspension.

The problems surrounding the current formulation of the immediate release tablets and oral suspension were the inconvenient dosing schedule and the extreme bitter taste. The extend-release tablets could not be broken or chewed before administration and were too big to swallow – especially for the pediatric and geriatric populations. To overcome these formulation issues, Sun Pharmaceuticals has developed Metformin HCl for extended release oral suspension (Riomet® ER) that offers reduced frequency of dose administration, ease of swallowability, dose flexibility, and acceptable taste. TKL was challenged to design a study with Sun Pharma to present consumers with the most acceptable version of the new extend release formulation.
